How did you get the idea to start your own publishing company?
As a published author, I began thinking about why so many indie presses don't do more to help their authors. So I did my research and what started as a nugget of an idea became a decision to try to build something that will actually help authors rather than take advantage of them.
Why did you decide to start up Bon Chance Press?
I really wanted to help authors get their books out there and help them not only publish them, but to help build their platform and help market their books. That's why BCP offers so many great (free) marketing options for our authors.
Why did you choose the name, Bon Chance Press, for your publishing company?
Bon Chance is a Cajun Creole name that means "good luck." I figure, authors need more than just talent and hard work. Sometimes they need a little luck, too. That's where we come in.
What is the hardest part of starting up Bon Chance Press?
It's a lot of hard work, but so well worth it. Everything so far has run so smoothly and so many people have reached out to be a part of this new company because they believe in what we stand for. But it's still a challenge to get authors to place their faith in me/us when we're still so brand new and unproven. To any authors considering submitting to us, I'd say this: I will work my rear end off for you and no one will do more for you than I will. Every press has its first few books/authors, so if authors are willing to take a leap of faith with me and put their trust in me, I will do everything in my power to take care of you like family and make sure your book gets as much exposure as possible. I have an AMAZING team (especially marketing) who will bring you into the fold and do everything they can for you, as well.
What is your company motto?
We are a publishing company created "by authors, for authors." Meaning, everyone who is a part of this company, from me as the publisher, all the way through my Marketing Director, editors, designers, and PA's are all authors, too. So we know what authors not only need, but what they want for their books. We understand you and we've been in your shoes before. That is why we will work harder for you than any other press out there.
I know your a newer publishing company, but what are your plans for the next few years?
Our goals are to be a major competitor in the indie publishing world. We hope to produce award-winning, best-selling authors. We may never be a million dollar press, but that's fine with me. I'd much rather have the time and energy to focus on the authors that are part of my family than to have so many books/authors that I can't even name them all.
How many books and authors are you hoping to sign and publish over the next few years?
That's a hard one. I'd love to get to a place where we release at least 4 books per month. Whether that means 48 new authors per year or twenty-something authors and their second, third, and fourth books, that is fine with me.
Are you open for submissions? If so, what are you looking for?
YES! We are currently seeking YA/NA/A fiction novels in suspense, romance, historical, fantasy, and more. See our Submission Guidelines on our website for more info on what we're seeking and how to submit.
If you could give authors or writers wanting to submit their manuscripts what advice do you have for them?
Do your research before submitting. It only takes a few minutes, and sending a proper query will make your submission stand out to us and get you noticed. We appreciate authors who take the time to read our guidelines and do their research and due diligence on how to properly query their novels. And doing it properly will increase your odds of receiving a full request from us!
